Who's in the mood for a blog hop?
Oh goody, me too.
And today, it's a fun one.

It's got a theme.
Our assignment was to do something over with paper.
To be honest, at first I was perplexed, but once I found my groove, I ended up giving new life to some leftover wallpaper and a thrifted find.
Let's talk about the wallpaper first, shall we?
Remember this?

My ill fated family room floral pattern? I adored that paper.
Until I didn't and ripped it all down.
But. I never gave up on the rolls I had stashed in the basement. I've been determined to find another use for them. And the hop gave me the perfect excuse to start.
You see, I've always been a form over function girl.
I mean, yes, I love hot water and electricity, I just don't really want to see the pipes or the outlets.
I feel the same way about the thermostats in our house. Not a fan.

Until now I had no way to cover them. However, with the help of that wallpaper, a $3 shadow box and a little push from my friend, Ann, I now have a solution.

It was so simple.
First, I removed the price sticker from the frame of the Pottery Barn shadow box. Luckily I didn't need to use my peanut butter trick.

Next, I washed the entire thing with vinegar and water.

And chose a part of the wallpaper I wanted to feature.

I laid the back of the frame on the wallpaper and traced around it with a pencil.
I made sure to trace the smallest part of the frame backing, since it was the same size as the glass I wanted to cover.
Then I trimmed the edges.

Then I popped in into the box.
To keep it anchored, I folded up a piece of cardstock and placed it behind the paper, no glue necessary.

That's it.
I placed the shadow box on top of the thermostat making it disappear from view.
The depth of the shadow box was a perfect match for our small unit. It fit right on top of it and sat there securely.

Replacing that (albeit necessary) eyesore with those fabulous roses instead.
Lovely.

Well, here's why. It all comes down to the question, should you cover your thermostat?

And the answer is no.
It may look better year round, but it's truly not recommended to cover your thermostat. It doesn't properly read the room temperature and blocks airflow.
Since we have separate thermostats for our heat and air conditioning units, I can cover this one, used to regulate the heat, during the spring and summer.
In winter, I'll remove the floral cover, expose that ugly box again, but I'll be warm, safe and energy efficient.

Win- win.
From April to October anyway.
😉
Is your thermostat covered?

Talk about timing! My hubsband walked in just as I was reading this post and said 'but you're not supposed to cover your thermostat'. Then I continued reading and you address just that lol! What a happy circumstance that you can cover it during the off season. It's so pretty Kim!
ReplyDeleteI need to do the same for my niece’s condo, but she has a huge electrical box in her bedroom. It’s such an eyesore - thanks for the inspiration!
So funny, Sara! See, these DIY guys really know their stuff! I've seen the pretty boxes with hinges, but my dad owned a heating business, so I knew it wasn't a good idea. Luckily our heating and cooling controls are separate so I can cover them up in the off season. Good luck with the electrical box. I know you'll come up with something super creative.
DeleteWhat a great idea and it looks pretty Kim. I like that you used that wallpaper leftover from your living room wall.
ReplyDeleteHi Julie! Thanks so much. I was so happy I was able to feature that paper on my gallery wall. It's just too pretty to sit in the basement!
DeleteThis is such a great idea. I love that wallpaper pattern. Happy weekend. Hugs. Kris
ReplyDeleteThanks Kris!! I love that wallpaper, I need to find more places to use it…just not on a the wall. 😉
DeleteIt looks great! I wish I could cover mine, but the same one is used year round for heat and air... :(
ReplyDeleteThanks Mari! Yes, that's the key for me, of course it also means that I have several thermostats around the house...which also isn't ideal.
DeleteCute idea and smart to use the hinges. Nice that you have two separate controls for heat/ac. xo Diana
ReplyDeleteThanks Diana! I was happy to cover the one in the kitchen. The other ones are in the hallway, so I don’t see those as often. At least during summer I can see flowers now. Heehee.
DeleteYour thermostat cover looks really pretty, Kim! I love the wallpaper design, but I must say if I made something like that my hubs would not let me put it up, lol! It would have to adorn my wall as a regular pretty picture and nothing more. And it absolutely could be that, too! Sorry!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Gail! I totally understand that, like I said, I can only cover it when the unit is off in the summer. I wouldn't be able to use it when the thermostat was functioning in winter. At least during the summer I get a better view!! Happy Hopping!!
DeleteOh Kim, that wallpaper, I loved it so... it matched up with your gallery wall perfectly! I have thought about covering the thermostat, but then I am always looking at it. It used to be that I was always hot, but now I am always cold... and so that has me thinking the heat must not be working, and I absolutely need to turn it up. Only to find, guess what? It is right where it needs to be. I hope you find a new place for this beaut when you take it down in the fall. It is too charming not to display, again, I loved that wallpaper! lol.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Cara! I do love that wallpaper. I'm glad I've found a {temporary} place for it and yes, I will definitely find a place for it this winter. Maybe I'll use it to cover the AC thermostat!
DeleteI have told you before I just loved that paper. I f you have any scraps left, send it my way my granddaughter would love that picture in her room. Love your stuff and its always so easy. Kim XOXO
ReplyDeleteIt really is so beautiful, Kim. I'm glad you like it and I think this would look perfect in a girl's room! 💕
DeleteA problem solved and you get pretty artwork! Great idea and I'm so glad you found a way to use some of that wallpaper.
ReplyDeleteThanks Ann! I definitely wouldn’t have gotten around to this for months, without this paper hop. I would’ve been staring at that ugly box for another summer. So thank you my friend. ❤️
DeleteWhat a fabulous idea Kim! Even if it's only a 3 season solution it looks great. I love that wallpaper!
ReplyDeleteI agree, Tuula, 3 seasons of flowers is better than none! And thanks!!
DeleteReally great Idea Kim, I love the final result. It is a shame it effects the thermostat readings, I got so excited when I saw this idea. But I only have the one, so a little sad.
