Who's in the mood for a blog hop?

Oh goody, me too.

And today, it's a fun one.

Thermostat on the wall, with text saying lets cover this up

It's got a theme.

Our assignment was to do something over with paper.

To be honest, at first I was perplexed, but once I found my groove, I ended up giving new life to some leftover wallpaper and a thrifted find.

Let's talk about the wallpaper first, shall we?

Remember this?

Cutting Wallpaper

My ill fated family room floral pattern? I adored that paper.

Until I didn't and ripped it all down

But. I never gave up on the rolls I had stashed in the basement. I've been determined to find another use for them. And the hop gave me the perfect excuse to start.

You see, I've always been a form over function girl.

I mean, yes, I love hot water and electricity, I just don't really want to see the pipes or the outlets.

I feel the same way about the thermostats in our house. Not a fan.

I get it, they're necessary, but they're not very pretty and I don't like the way they so brazenly interrupt my carefully planned decor.

Until now I had no way to cover them. However, with the help of that wallpaper, a $3 shadow box and a little push from my friend, Ann, I now have a solution.

Thrifted Shadow Box on a counter

It was so simple.

First, I removed the price sticker from the frame of the Pottery Barn shadow box. Luckily I didn't need to use my peanut butter trick.

Removing Sticky Price Tags with razon blade from wooden frame

Next, I washed the entire thing with vinegar and water.

Wiping down a picture frame with vinegar and water and wiping with paper towel

Then I removed the backing.

And chose a part of the wallpaper I wanted to feature.

Old Wallpaper under glass of shadow box frame

I laid the back of the frame on the wallpaper and traced around it with a pencil.

I made sure to trace the smallest part of the frame backing, since it was the same size as the glass I wanted to cover.

Then I trimmed the edges.

I used my brand new paper cutter, the one that Santa brought me, to get a super straight line.

Then I popped in into the box.

To keep it anchored, I folded up a piece of cardstock and placed it behind the paper, no glue necessary.

Placing cardstock into the back of a shadow box

That's it.

I placed the shadow box on top of the thermostat making it disappear from view.

The depth of the shadow box was a perfect match for our small unit. It fit right on top of it and sat there securely.

Replacing that (albeit necessary) eyesore with those fabulous roses instead.

Lovely.

Now, you might ask me why I didn't add hinges to cover the thermostat, rather than just placing it over the unit.

Well, here's why. It all comes down to the question, should you cover your thermostat?

Should You Cover Your Heating Thermostat

And the answer is no.

It may look better year round, but it's truly not recommended to cover your thermostat. It doesn't properly read the room temperature and blocks airflow.

Since we have separate thermostats for our heat and air conditioning units, I can cover this one, used to regulate the heat, during the spring and summer.

In winter, I'll remove the floral cover, expose that ugly box again, but I'll be warm, safe and energy efficient.

Plus, Mr. Exquisitely Unremarkable, who is an avid DIYer - and do it the right way kind of guy - will be happy with me.

Win- win.

From April to October anyway.

😉

Is your thermostat covered?

Ok!

Now it's time to hop and see all the other paper upcycles.

  1. Talk about timing! My hubsband walked in just as I was reading this post and said 'but you're not supposed to cover your thermostat'. Then I continued reading and you address just that lol! What a happy circumstance that you can cover it during the off season. It's so pretty Kim!

I need to do the same for my niece’s condo, but she has a huge electrical box in her bedroom. It’s such an eyesore - thanks for the inspiration!

    1. So funny, Sara! See, these DIY guys really know their stuff! I've seen the pretty boxes with hinges, but my dad owned a heating business, so I knew it wasn't a good idea. Luckily our heating and cooling controls are separate so I can cover them up in the off season. Good luck with the electrical box. I know you'll come up with something super creative.

    1. Thanks Mari! Yes, that's the key for me, of course it also means that I have several thermostats around the house...which also isn't ideal.

    1. Thanks Diana! I was happy to cover the one in the kitchen. The other ones are in the hallway, so I don’t see those as often. At least during summer I can see flowers now. Heehee.

  6. Your thermostat cover looks really pretty, Kim! I love the wallpaper design, but I must say if I made something like that my hubs would not let me put it up, lol! It would have to adorn my wall as a regular pretty picture and nothing more. And it absolutely could be that, too! Sorry!

    1. Thank you, Gail! I totally understand that, like I said, I can only cover it when the unit is off in the summer. I wouldn't be able to use it when the thermostat was functioning in winter. At least during the summer I get a better view!! Happy Hopping!!

  7. Oh Kim, that wallpaper, I loved it so... it matched up with your gallery wall perfectly! I have thought about covering the thermostat, but then I am always looking at it. It used to be that I was always hot, but now I am always cold... and so that has me thinking the heat must not be working, and I absolutely need to turn it up. Only to find, guess what? It is right where it needs to be. I hope you find a new place for this beaut when you take it down in the fall. It is too charming not to display, again, I loved that wallpaper! lol.

  11. Really great Idea Kim, I love the final result. It is a shame it effects the thermostat readings, I got so excited when I saw this idea. But I only have the one, so a little sad.
