I used a couple of old ceiling fan glass globe shades to make a pair of darling upcycled angels.
I was able to create them with supplies I had around the house in minutes. Check out the full, quick and easy DIY.
In recent years, it's become one of my favorite pastimes.
There's something about the thrill of the hunt that excites me, way more than shopping retail.
Perhaps, it's because I like unique decor, vintage treasures, nostalgic pieces and best of all, items I can makeover.
Or maybe it's because I love a bargain.
Either way, I always go in with an open mind as I scan the shelves.
However, like most people, I do have a few favorites that I just can't pass up when I stumble upon them.
And glass ceiling fan globes are on the top of that list.
A few years ago, I glass shades to make the most darling ghost lanterns for Halloween.
Then a few months later, I built a Christmas tree....and I loved both of those crafts.
But. I think the glass angels I made this week are my favorites.
I'm a big fan of angel crafts. Over the years, I've made several, including:
- Vintage Handkerchief Angels
- Denim Pocket Angels
- Rustic Wooden Junk Angels
- Old Fashioned Macaroni Angel Ornaments and more.
I just needed to fill in the gaps with supplies from my craft closet.
How To Make A Ceiling Fan Shade Angel
Now, there are lots of ways you can turn glass shades into angels. I'm sharing what I did in the hopes of inspiring you to get creative and use what you have on hand.
Here's what I used and some alternate suggestions.
Supplies:
Ceiling fan globe shadeBaby sock
Fiberfill
Ribbon
Spanish moss
Glue gun
Needle and thread
Leafy garland for halo
Alternate Supplies:
Wooden or styrofoam ball for a headWooden wings, gauze wings - dollar store often has both
Pip berry or flora garland or buttons on floral wire for halo
Yarn for hair
The process was very simple.
I started by stuffing the sock with fiberfill until it was the proper size for the angel's head.
I had a baby sock left over from an angel ornament craft I made several years ago.
Next, I pulled the sock through the opening of the shade.
Besides being the ideal size for the angel's head, the baby sock had the perfect edging for this project.
Dainty and feminine.
To anchor it in place, I used a teeny drop of hot glue in a few places, to attach the sock to the glass.
Once the head was firmly in place, I cut a messy chunk of moss away from the bunch and hot glued it to the angel's head.
Moss is messy and imperfect to work with, it takes a bit of finessing.
I just kept adding moss until I was happy with the hairstyle, cutting it here and there until it looked right.
I also hot glued a halo, made from a leafy wired garland on each head before moving onto the wings.
As I mentioned above, I had several choices for wings on hand, but I decided to go with ribbon.
I liked the idea of something a little softer looking and the polka dots were too cute to pass up.
To construct the wings, I simply wound the ribbon around my fingers twice and glued the layers together in the center, again with hot glue.
Then using even more hot glue, I attached them to the back of the glass globe. Simple.
At this point, I could've been done. I've made lots of angels and not all of them have had a face.
But something in my gut kept nagging at me that these dollies needed a little more, so I added eyes with black thread.
Embroidery floss would've been better, thicker, but I didn't have any black in my stash, so instead, I used four strands of thread. It worked as well.
And it was the perfect finishing touch.
In pairs or on their own.
Those angels were even more adorable at night, glowing from battery operated votive candles, I had hidden under those fluted skirts.
That was the real finishing touch.
Now, they'll be warming up my cottage all year long.
With their unique, upcycled thrifted charm.
Not bad for 99 cents.
😉

ReplyDeleteThanks Dotte!! ❤️ I've had that pig for decades! When the kids were little and were getting bit noisy, I used to tell them they needed to be quieter or they'd wake the pig. Now they tell me that when I'm talking on the phone! Heehee!
