I live in a cottage and I adore it.
I know it's not for everyone, but there's something appealing about the design quirks and vintage details.
Not to mention the way the entire dwelling just feels like it hugs me.

As a matter of fact, I'm such a fan of cottage living that this is actually my second one.
Both were built in the 1920's.
Both have been located in the same small beach community.
And, as expected, both of my historic homes have had tiny rooms.
The smallest being the bathrooms.
However.
Just because my rooms lack square footage, doesn't mean they can't be big on style.
Even in the bathrooms.

Nope, I can't fit a soaker tub for two or double sinks in my current en suite, but that doesn't mean it isn't jam packed with charming decor.
Trust me, I've squeezed as much style, color and flair as I possibly could into that compact space.
And I've done it in a way that doesn't make it feel cluttered or sacrifice function.
It simply makes me smile from every angle.
When we moved in, some twenty plus years ago, this bathroom was a hodgepodge of old and new.
Barely functional, we tore out the sweet original, but badly rusted, pedestal sink, old yellow toilet, painted the walls and added a really big mirror on the wall to open the space up.

Visually.
It took about a decade for us to rip everything out and give that bathroom a complete makeover.
White tiles, white walls and a dark vanity to anchor the space.
And I loved it.
For about another 10 years. That's when I decided that I needed a new vanity. One that had more space and forced me to bend down less.
I found one that fit, which is always a challenge, but it was so plain, this color loving girl just couldn't take it.
So I gave that vanity an update.
Then I gave it another.

That led me to swap out the fabric on the shuttered doors.
Which prompted me to make a new window valance...with pom poms.
And replace the bathroom door with a fabric covered French version.

Apparently, some decor items just have a mind of their own.
It'd be lovely if they had a voice of their own, as well, because maybe then the thrifted frames I hung on the wall could tell me what would look good inside of them.
So far, they've been dressing up the walls with their green floral accents.

Empty on the inside.
Waiting for me to discover the perfect pictures to fit those tiny frames.
In the tiny bathroom.
In my tiny house.

If only it were that easy in real life.
😉

Happy Decorating, Friends!

You have such a gift for decorating and adding charm! I do like what those rugs do to the room. And I think green is such a Springy color - looks cheerful and cozy!
ReplyDeleteThank you Mari! You are always so sweet and complimentary. I like the green rugs, too. I have been using white ones for decades, I'd forgotten how great color looks on the floor!
DeleteLove all the updates. Our bathrooms are just as tiny. No updates other than a low flow toilet and costmetics like painting the vinyl floors and walls. I went with orange in one of the bathrooms and while it sounds like an unusual choise, it really brightens up the windowless space.
ReplyDeleteI think orange sounds like so much fun, Sara!! I always say, if it makes you smile, then you should go for it. I bet it's a very happy room!!
DeleteI love all the pretty changes you've made over the years to your bathroom! I agree, small space can have big style.
ReplyDeleteI'm all for big style in small space, Sherry!! Probably because I have no choice!! Haha!!
DeleteI don't have big style in my small bathroom, but as soon as the last one moves out, I'm working on it! I love the green and white in yours - so fresh!
ReplyDeleteThanks Gina! I’m giggling at your comment, because my other bathroom had big style…for a few months…now it has kids again! 😉
DeleteYour cottage bathroom is so charming. It is the little touches that sets it apart. The French doors and the curtain on the vanity door. Love those touches. Green is always a soft and comfy color. Love it all Kim. Hugs. Kris
ReplyDeleteThank you, Kris! I really do like all the details. They were easy to add and they make me smile. Thankfully I have a hubby who likes it when I’m smiling, so he’s happy with them, too! Heehee
DeleteThat is a lovely bathroom space!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, Joanne!! I really appreciate the comment!
DeleteI love the French door a lot. Your bath is about the same size as mine in my bedroom. My house built 1969 and apparently the going style at that time were small bathrooms. Love the touches you have added to your bath and the green is a color I am really loving now. I have mint green tile in my hall bath and not gonna change it so I will do as you have and add some decorative towels and other accents. It's funny how when shopping home goods everything seems to jump-off the shelves in my basket. I have got to stay out of that store for a while. I purchase way too much.
ReplyDeleteI am sure you will find just the right picture or trinket to place in those pretty frames. I really like those. I look forward to seeing what you do with them.
Well, you have put me in the mood for repainting my bath and maybe a Home Goods run, well a good excuse for one anyway.
HomeGoods is a dangerous place, Betsy, I agree! I honestly hadn't been there in years. The stock after 2020 was either lacking or just plain boring. However, a few recent trips there have been quite fruitful...as you said, things just seem to jump into my cart! Thanks for the sweet words about the bathroom. I believe that room was added on to the house in the 1960's so it makes sense. It's the same style and set up as the bathroom in my parents' bedroom when I was growing up...a home also built in the 60s. I guess there weren't a lot of ladies designing houses back then!! 😉 Enjoy your redecorating!!
DeleteI love the pops of green with the white in your bathroom. The bathroom looks so pretty and I love the hand towel and the rugs.
ReplyDeleteHi Julie! Happy Spring and thanks so much! I like those green accents, too. They really make it feel warmer in there.
DeleteBeautiful... and you know I love your cottage and your style.
ReplyDeleteWe have a small bathroom too. 2023 we painted it white, and two shades of grey. I purchased new towels and rugs, in shades of grey. :-)
xx oo
Carla
Thanks Carla!! Your bathroom sounds lovely, too. Calm and soothing…just what a bathroom should be!! Happy Spring!
DeleteThis is so fun! I love seeing what other people are able to do with small bathrooms. Your updates make the room feel more spacious. This gives me so much inspiration for my own small bathroom. Thank you so much for sharing!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for letting me know this post resonated with you! Small bathrooms are much more common than large ones and I know they can be a challenge to decorate so I'm happy to share mine in hopes it inspires others to think big when it comes to adding style and decor!!
DeleteThe deep green rugs really ground the space and contribute to the cottage cuteness of it all. I’m seeing silhouettes in those sweet empty frames. Or pressed ferns the color of the rugs. Pamela
ReplyDeleteThanks Pamela! I really love those green rugs, you're right, they anchor the space. They add a charm, too. Hmmm...silhouettes, that would be interesting! I love the pressed fern idea, too. I appreciate the ideas, because, shame on me, they're still empty. I've been stumped!
