Where do you hang the curtain rod?
It's a big question and not an easy one to answer with so many different types of curtains and window styles. Lots of supposed rules.
Well, here's what I say.

And people are pretty up in arms about it.
That's ok. I've been doing it for years and I've got a pretty tough shell.
You see, the thing is, I don't believe in decorating rules. I think they're nonsense.
And firmly entrenched in my 50s I can confidently say, I'm smart enough to never say never.
Especially when it comes to decorating.
It's kind of my pet peeve, so I've written about my utter disdain for the so called rules of decor before. Way back in 2014.

At the time I was accused of breaking the cardinal rule. Never paint a small space a dark color. That one makes me cringe.
In our first house I painted our tiny bedroom a dark teal and loved it. And in this house I painted our teeny bathroom a deep red and adored it.

Neither paint job changed the square footage of the rooms or closed them in. They were both dramatic spaces that were filled with personality and color.
And they were gorgeous.
But most importantly, they were mine. And that's what I wanted to do with them, which is all that really matters.
Besides, cottage rooms, by definition, are small. Do the rule makers of the world think it would be better for me to live without my favorite tones, simply because I don't have a large enough rooms?
Was I supposed to wait until I had a bigger home to surround myself with colors that brought me joy?
That just doesn't make any sense.
And spoiler alert, I still live in a cottage, albeit a slightly larger one, but does that mean I should never get to enjoy a dark colored wall?

Nonsense.
If something makes me happy, in my own home, why should anyone care? I mean isn't loving where you live the end goal of decorating? Isn't that what all the pros say? Decorate with what you love?
I always seem to miss that asterik that notes the exceptions.
Interesting...
Anyway, what's my latest infraction?
Well, it's all about my curtain rods.
You see, I wrote a post detailing my quick and easy fix to cover up that nasty center bracket on a dark curtain rod and it's been getting a bit of attention.
People really find it helpful and that makes me smile.
However. I've also been called out, in no uncertain terms, for the fact that my curtain rods are mounted to the window trim and that is a huge no no.
Curtain rods should be always be mounted above the window and never on the trim.
Mmhmm. More rules.
And my favorite word...never...again.

So Where Do You Hang Curtain Rods?
Now as I said before, I have a thick skin. I'm from NY and I don't care what people say, I like what I like, and do what's right for me in my home. So I've let most of these comments, and emails go.
But it bothers me that there may be people out there reading about these rules and thinking they are doing something wrong. When it is simply not the case.
Because, once again, there are no decorating rules.
And furthermore, there are many reasons why you might not mount your curtains rods above the frame.
First, you just may not like the look of that empty space between the top of the window and a high mounted rod.

And that's ok.
It's your house, you should love the view wherever you look. Including the space above the window.
There is no right or wrong, whatever makes you smile is right. The end.
Second the only thing constant about design, is that trends come and go.

What's in today, will undoubtedly be considered dated in short order. So following those rules strictly for the sake of compliance, can be tricky and pricy business.
Clearly I'm not a trend girl.
Hanging curtain rods above the window dates back to Victorian times, but it's a trend that's been enjoying a recent resurgence as it accents higher ceilings and those very popular long, straight panels.
Yes, it's been trendy before, but during the 70s, 80s and 90s, valances and heavy wooden cornices routinely covered the top of the moulding and even some of the window.
And everything was mounted to the frame...that was the rule back then. See what I mean?
Third, they hide a roller shade or blind that you don't want to see.

Privacy is important and there are a lot of ways to get some depending on your budget and your window design.
Unfortunately, not all of them are pretty.
And you may want to cover them up. That's your prerogative.
Fourth, and my reason for mounting the rods on the trim, is that you may not be able to secure them to the wall.

Understandably, the walls are not in great condition. Sometimes you put a nail in the wall and it sticks.
Then there are the other times...the times when you give that nail a light tap and the whole wall opens up. Not fun.
Or you may have a window where there is no room above the window frame at all. Old houses have quirks and you need to make do.

So when we hung the curtains in question we mounted them to the trim.
Of course, you might point out that the kitchen was an addition, so the sheetrock is new and that is correct.
No issue there, but the other rods in the house are mounted on the trim, so for continuity, we did the same.

The one exception is the living room, where the walls are wood paneling and the windows in there have no trim, so we were able to mount them a little higher.
That room is fully compliant if the decor police are keeping track.
But the bottom line is that I like the placement of the rods in all the rooms.
Which brings me right back to my decorating rule number one.
Which is there are no rules.
And if someone tells you otherwise, just send the over here, to the girl from NY.
The one with tiny, brightly colored rooms, overhead lighting, laminate kitchen countertops and bisque colored appliances.
Oh yeah, and curtain rods mounted to the trim.
Just the way I like them.
😉

Do you follow decorating rules?
Happy Decorating (the way you want to..), Friends!

I am the same way with "rules!" We have a tiny 1/2 bath and it's a deep burgundy color...and I love it. Also, our curtains are ON the trim. My husband nearly had a heart attack when we moved into our brand new home and I started drilling holes in the trim to hang curtains but our windows are HUGE and I have a hard enough time finding curtains to fit with hanging them on the trim. Adding a few more inches to go above the windows would have made it even harder and I don't need our windows looking any taller than they are.
ReplyDeleteYour bathroom sounds just dreamy, Joanne! I love hearing that your curtains on your trim, too. I get it, our kitchen windows are huge, too. Plus, the walls are uneven heights so it makes more sense to have them on the trim for symmetry.
DeleteHey my theory is surround yourself in what you love and you will be happy. I think everyone should paint colors they love and not worry about the size of a room. Your sweet cottage is a perfect example that smaller rooms can have darker colors and look beautiful. Big Hugs. Kris
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Kris! Clearly, I'm not a rule follower when it comes to decor. Big hugs right back!
DeleteAs I read, I was looking up and back at my screen and up because I don't think any of my curtains follow the rules. Whoops. I'm not taking them down, either. Love your stuff!
ReplyDeleteMissy, you just made my day! I'm so glad to hear I'm not the only one with curtains that don't follow the rules! Plus your sweet comment made me smile. Thank you!!
DeleteI to love RED, and use cream yellow with it in my kitchen. If I love it and it works. I am not a trend follower. I go with what I like, after all I have to live with it.
ReplyDeleteI agree 110%! Plus it sounds just lovely...I mean red and cream. I'm swooning from here!!
DeleteHey I love your atitude, and even more your STYLE! Keep it up, love your blog!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much!! You just made my day! ❤️
DeleteI firmly believe rules were made to be broken - especially when it comes to decorating your home. 'Do You', my friend. That's always the right thing to do!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Ann! I think decorating is an artist expression and I don’t think there should be rules. Clearly, you don’t think so either. ☺️
DeleteTotally agreed! Your cottage is adorable Kim and I love the way you decorate it. Keep your blogs coming! Tricia ox
DeleteThank you so much, Tricia! What a lovely thing to say!! ❤️
DeleteLove your philosophy! I'm not afraid of the "decorating" police stopping by. I do what I prefer. This house was built in the 1860's and it has LOTS of flaws and quirks. And I love it!
ReplyDelete1860's!! I am jealous. I love flaws and quirks in old houses. To me it means they're filled with character. I love it, too!!
DeleteNope- Not a trend follower at all here. I may bring in a trendy pillow or two but for the basics I stick to what I love and put it where I love it. lol. I lived 17 miles from the NY border growing up so maybe your NY attitude jumped the state line.
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful weekend. Your home has always oozed comfort and color and love. xo Diana
Diana, I had you pegged long ago, a true original, my friend, no trends for you! Also, I think that you were born with that independent streak...although your close proximity to NY may have helped a teeny bit. 😉
DeleteOh my, I think I've broken EVERY rule....don't call the police, I still have valances and cafe's in most rooms. The rods for both are on the window frames, and in my 75 year old home, that's just right!! :-) Blessings, J
ReplyDeleteHaha, J, I won't be calling anyone, except maybe Better Homes to let them know they should be photographing your lovely charm filled home. Rules be...well you know! 😉
DeleteHi Kim, I love how you embrace decorating your way! It’s so refreshing to see someone break the “rules” and make their home truly theirs. you know i also want to break the rules of my house. Thanks for sharing dear.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the comment and I say break those rules and make your space what you like!!
