I made a charming cake stand from a dollar store plate and bowl. It was an easy craft, super inexpensive. Plus it's both useful to serve food and looks lovely on its own as decor.
Check out the full DIY.
Darling DIYs that I swear I'm going to make someday.
I add them to Pinterest or I snap a quick photo.
And then promptly forget about them.
Sometimes for years.
Then one day, in a fit of cleaning or organizing, I run into one of my saved items and decide to make it right away.
Well today was one of those days.
I was this close to deleting a photo I'd saved years ago about combining a plate and a bowl to make a cake stand when I decided to go for it.
You see, in addition to being an avid dish collector, I also collect cake plates.
I've even made one from wood and made over several I've found thrifting.
Yup. The girl who doesn't really bake, and rarely eats cake anymore, is a sucker for any dessert stand she sees.
So combining my two loves was a natural next move. Especially when I could get my supplies at Dollar Tree for under three bucks.
They have some really great patterns and most are made by Royal Norfolk and hold up well in daily use.
My intention was to create a plain, red stand, but once I saw the sunflower set, it was all over.
I grabbed one dinner plate and one cereal bowl and headed home.
I had everything else I needed tucked away in my craft closet.
Hot glue is a great solution for a quick and easy bond. I use it all the time. However, I'm not sure how long it would last on an unglazed, porous surface and how well it would hold up after a few washes.
E6000 might be better, maybe someone in the comments will weigh in, but I've never used it, so I can't give an informed answer.
What I do know, is that epoxy is strong, waterproof and once it cures, that bond is almost indestructible.
So that's what I used...and since I was using it on a project that will be touching food, I opted for this food grade epoxy.
It probably wasn't necessary since it won't directly be touching my food, but better safe than sorry.
Once I had my supplies, I removed the tag from the plate.
And the bowl, making sure to remove all the paper and sticky glue left behind.
I didn't need to use my price tag removal trick, but if it hadn't come off so easily, I would've.
I mixed equal amounts of both in a paper cup. Then I applied the mixture with a small brush to the bottom rim of the bowl.
No one was home when I did this project and I was trying hard not to get epoxy everywhere, so I don't have any photos of that part of the process, but you get the idea.
Once the rim was well coated, I popped it onto the back on the dish, making sure it was centered. Then I set it aside and waited.
This epoxy was rather thin and it was slow to cure, but when it had fully dried, I had a darling, cake stand that looked so summery and perfect in my kitchen.
With food.
Or without.
Of course, now that I've made this one, I'll be on the hunt for vintage pieces at the thrift store.
Or holiday plates?
Or ones for fall?
I mean the possibilities are positively endless.
I just might have to start eating cake again to justify my new obsession.
I mean a girl's gotta do, what a girl's gotta do.
Right?
😉
Do you have projects waiting in the wings?
Happy Crafting, Friends!
That is so cute! I like your idea of using resin for longevity. I'm thinking what a great idea this would be for a shower or occasion where you have a table full of food and want to elevate some. I'm remembering this one, thanks!
ReplyDeleteThanks Mari! I can’t believe how easy it was and, yes, as I said, they can be made for any occasion. I love the idea of making them for a shower. That could be so colorful and fun!! Glad to hear you liked this one!!
DeleteI love this idea, Kim. Glad to know about the epoxy resin.
ReplyDeleteHa! Something easy and necessary! Having moved and left all my stuff, every time I go to a church social function that requires food, there is nothing in my cupboard to put food on/in. And it's a good excuse to look for dishes at garage sales/thrift shops. Thanks! You're my favorite! But we already know that.
ReplyDeleteOh...I love that word...necessary!! Well, now I have permission to buy plates and bowls with abandon! Thank you my friend, I think I may go shopping now. 🤫
DeleteSuper cute idea! I love the dollar store for fun things like that. I just gave my grandgirl all my Fall plates/etc for Fall that I got at the $ Store last year. She just moved into her first apartment and was thrilled to get them. I might have to make her a little cake stand now. I use E6000 and have had very good luck with it but prefer a glue gun when I can use it for a project. xo Diana
ReplyDeleteDiana, that is so sweet of you. Dishes are pricey and I'm sure she was super appreciative. I hadn't thought about making the cake stands as coordinating pieces for my existing dish sets, but now I'm obsessed!! I bet your granddaughter would love a matching cake plate and for less than $3 to make it'll cost you more to ship it!! xxoo
DeleteThis is suer cute. Our Dollar Tree is horrible. I visit in hopes of finding cute things like this and don't. Bloggers have told me they have heard the same thing. Bummer. Such an easy project too!
ReplyDeleteI hear you, Cindy! I feel the same way. I often see things on Instagram or TikTok that I aren’t available in our Dollar Tree either. I guess some areas of the country get different items…it is a bummer. Maybe they’ll be some cute dishes in your store for fall!
DeleteVery cute! I love how easy that was. You are giving me even more ideas! Haha! I also love cake plates and pie dishes. Those decorative pie dishes almost get me every time. I have a couple I absolutely love. These would be so adorable with holiday-themed dishes, too! Love it!
ReplyDeleteThanks Mandy!! Yeah...I think I just opened a dangerous door for myself, too. Now I have no reason not to buy dishes and bowls at whim. In this small cottage, that's not good! 😉
DeleteI love this cute cake stand you made Kim. I love that this was made for a few dollars. It will look great for fall.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Julie! This was so easy and it looks great...anyone can do it!
DeleteYou're a genius and the possibilities are endless! I guess I'll add this to my list of things to find while at yard sales and estate sales. Who doesn't need another cake stand??
ReplyDeleteHaha…endless is the right word, but oh, it's a dangerous one! Watch out yard sales, here we come!!
DeleteThis is just so adorable. I can see using one by a sink for soaps and brushes or in a bathroom for lotions and potions or on a dresser for jewelry. Marty of A Stroll Through Life Blog showcases the cake plate on her Friday post. Pamela
ReplyDeleteHi Pamela! Thanks so much and thanks for letting me know about Marty! I just popped over to thank her. Love your idea of using this in the bathroom. Now I want to make one for those rooms and one for my kitchen sink. Haha!!
DeleteAnother great idea. I am pinning this one Kim. Thank you!!! :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks Carla! I like this one, because it was easy, cheap and the colors make me smile! I could see it in your flower filled, happy kitchen!!
