It's here! It's here!
My brand new {very old} chair is back from the reupholstery shop and I have to say, I am in love.
It was used, in our kitchen, on a daily basis.
It had grown up alongside our toddlers, in a busy household, filled with sticky fingers and pets.
And wrestling, lots of wrestling, to see who would sit in the only upholstered chair in the kitchen.
Well, until I bought myself a very comfy desk chair, but that's another story.
This one was affectionately referred to as the queen's chair, since I'm the queen of our home, and a very good wrestler, but eventually, all that love wore a giant hole in her majesty's seat.
I tried to fix it...twice, as a matter of fact. The first time I added a piece of fabric over the seat in an effort to cover up that unsightly rip.
That patchwork ruffle change turned my standard dining wing chair into a custom designed cottage style showstopper.
So earlier this year, when I couldn't stop noticing the stains and the sagging bottom, it became clear that the type of furniture rebuild this baby needed was way beyond my iron on tape skill set.
Which made me a little nervous.
It was my DIY pride and joy. Plus, it defined my kitchen style.
At first, I looked high and low for a chair to replace it, one with floral fabric and the right proportions to fit the breakfast nook. When I failed, I looked for a plain white version that I could DIY and skirt up by myself again, with no luck.
That's when I decided to have this one, not only reupholstered, but completely rebuilt.
The floral fabric is Swavelle Mill Creek Torch Singer Bouquet, I bought it locally and the matelassé is called Nahant in Ivory from Calico Corners.
I adore it. Like, weak in the knees, ADORE it.
I actually gasped in the store when we picked it up. It was still shrouded in layers of plastic and my husband was joking around with the staff that he couldn't wait to go home and eat a big plate of spaghetti on it.
While I shot back that I may have to keep it wrapped in plastic, like my mom did with our furniture in the 70s, and everyone laughed, my mind was firmly on that chair. A little breathless from its beauty.
However. If it's not for you, I get it.
It's a departure from the old style. After all, been there, done that. Besides, it's been over a decade since the first makeover.
My style's evolved a bit. I was hoping for something a little more modern, but I still wanted to keep its feminine, country cottage, warm and inviting vibe. I think I've succeeded.
C'mon, isn't she lovely?
The floral fabric is embroidered with the most charming and delicate pattern. However, that means sitting on it could be a dangerous prospect, so we didn't put it on the seat.
For that, we used the same fabric from the family room window seat. The rooms are so close together, it just made sense.
Plus, it's a classic, cottage style matelasse.
Although, the fabric was stunning, so I couldn't just put it on a skirt, which is longer this time around to cover the legs.
Instead, I put it everywhere else.
And we tied it all together with a pop of deep red welting. I have to be honest, the weather here has been frightful, on cue, I suppose.
But it makes taking pictures very difficult and so they really don't do the colors justice, but I couldn't wait to share my new treasure.
And you get the gist.
Rest assured, there will be many, many more photos to come.
As I share this room during the holidays, in the upcoming weeks...and beyond.
Because this gem will be front and center for all to see.
And only see, because so far no one (and their big bowl of red sauce) has been allowed to sit on it.
Except, of course, the queen.
😉
So, give it to me straight. How do you like the chair?
Oh Kim, the chair looks amazing. I have one in my garage which needs a similar treatment. You just may have inspired me to get it done.
ReplyDeleteCarol, thank you so much! I just adore the new version and I have to say it makes me smile to hear that it's inspired you to tackle your own chair project. I hope you'll keep us posted!!
DeleteThis is just perfect! Red is my favorite color for decorating, so I am enchanted! Goes beautifully with your cottage style. And Mr. spaghetti bowl would only be able to look at it from across the room! 🤣🤣🤣
ReplyDeleteHaha! Julie, trust me, he isn't even allowed to look at it after that crack! 🤣 I have to say, the old version had such a place in my heart, but this one is just gorgeous. I'm glad to hear you love it as well!! Thanks for letting me know.
DeleteIt's gorgeous! The fabric is perfect. And now I'm really regretting that we didn't reupholster ours that looked very similar.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, Nikki! ❤️ I get it, it wasn't an easy decision to reupholster the chair. It was a long wait, it took me almost a year to find the right fabric and I wasn't sure if my idea on paper was going to look good in real life. If I didn't have to stick with this size, I probably would've tossed this one, too.
DeleteI love it !! The curved back is special. Now you have a beautiful slipper chair. No read sauce to be eaten in that chair.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much!! It really is very special and you're right, absolutely no red sauce in that chair!!
DeleteOooooh! I love it!!! That fabric is so gorgeous. I always liked your chair, but now it's even better!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Mari! I'm so happy that I went for it and took a chance to recover it.
DeleteOMGOSH- Could it be any more perfect?! I love it and they did a fantastic job with the upholstery work. Wow. Wow. Wow. I would be afraid to sit on it in all its prettiness! lol. What fun to have a piece redone and love it more than the original (which I think you do). Happy Thanksgiving! xo Diana
ReplyDeleteThank you, Diana!! I so love it and I agree, the upholsterer was amazing. The designer at the shop was very helpful, too. I had definite ideas about what I wanted and she literally drew it up with colored pencils so I could see it before I committed. 🤣 I hope you have a lovely Thanksgiving!
Delete❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🙋🏼♀️
ReplyDeleteYou are the sweetest!! Thank you!!
DeleteSo Pretty!! I would love it in my home too.........
ReplyDeleteThank you, Dotte!! It's very sweet in person.
DeleteYour chair is lovely and goes so very well with your dining area. I really enjoy your blog. You decorate very similar to me. It give me little ideas and nudges to get a few things done.😊
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, Kathy! I really appreciate your super kind words, you just made my day. ❤️
DeleteI love the chair. The fabric looks good in the kitchen. Now I want to do something like that to my kitchen. Very, very nice look!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Jeanie!! I knew the fabric swatches looked good next to the curtains, but they were so tiny. It actually looks better than I expected.
DeleteIt's beautiful! I love it!! - Briana from Texas
ReplyDeleteThanks Briana!! It's very sweet in person. Happy Thanksgiving!!
DeleteGorgeous!
ReplyDeleteWhere did you get the material?
Thanks so much! The floral fabric is Swavelle Mill Creek Torch Singer Bouquet, I bought it locally and the matelassé is called Nahant in Ivory from Calico Corners. I hope that helps.
DeleteNow THAT is absolutely a chair fit for a regal queen! I love how you mixed the patterns up. And it looks fantastic with your curtains. I'm a fan! It's beautiful!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Mandy!! Haha...my kids were like the queen's chair is back! I just know that won't matter on Thanksgiving though, they'll all want to sit there.
DeleteKim I loved the chair before and now it is so gorgeous. Love the box pleats and that fabric is so cottage cute. It looks so good with the drapes I know you must be so excited to get it finally and see how beautiful it came out. Happy Thanksgiving. Kris
ReplyDeleteHappy Thanksgiving, Kris! Thank you so much, those box pleats were a last minute addition. I wanted a skirt from the beginning, but the shop kept telling me it wasn't a good idea. I'm glad I stuck to my original idea. ☺️
DeleteThat is gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteAn indelicate question. How much did the total job cost? I would love to do that.
Thank you! As far as price goes, I got 3 estimates. One was as high as $1400, this one was about $600., which I thought was a great price for a brand new custom chair..also, I'm in NY.
DeleteMoney well spent. It’s beautiful.
DeleteSuch a comfortable and cozy home.
Thank you so much!
DeleteIt`s absolutely beautiful ,
ReplyDeleteThank you so much and thanks for the comment!! It was nice of you to take the time.
DeleteOh Kim, this chair is breathtaking! I love the skirt on the chair and the back is a showstopper. This is cottage perfect! Happy Thanksgiving.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Cindy! I just had to have another skirt! Happy Thanksgiving!!
DeleteTo say I adore it would be a huge understatement ! It is off the charts
ReplyDeleteKim. This chair may not only be the focal piece of your dining room, I dare say it may even be the focal point of the whole house. And that my girl is saying something….because there is that sofa that is a serious contender. You are making some killer updates! Happy Thanksgiving
Kim
Thank you so much, Susan!! That's some compliment!! ❤️ I have to say, I'm swooning myself whenever I catch a glimpse of it. I have it positioned so I can see it while I'm sitting at my desk and I'm beginning to get a neck cramp from the constant glances. Haha!! I hope you had a great Thanksgiving in your cottage by the sea and Merry Christmas my friend!
DeleteYour chair is beautiful! I love red as well and that chair is swoon worthy. Great job in pulling together the fabrics for a unique, stunning chair!
ReplyDeleteThanks! I'm always drawn to bold colors and this pattern just made me take notice. Once I saw it, I had to have it. I'm glad you like it!
DeleteBEAUTIFUL!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much!! I love that word and the caps!! ❤️
DeleteKim, your chair is gorgeous. I love the new design. Enjoy your queen chair again and don't let the hubby eat spaghetti near it. Happy Thanksgiving.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Linda! I love the way it turned out and I agree, I don't think that spaghetti is going to improve the aesthetic! 🤣
DeleteOh Kim, I can see why you're in love! It's absolutely stunning! Just so beautiful!!!! I know you will enjoy it for many, many days to come!!!! You "might" have to banish spaghetti in the kitchen, though, lol!
ReplyDeleteHaha!! So funny, Marilyn! He's already been banned from eating spaghetti on the new green checked sofa in the family room. Poor guy is running out of places to sit with his sauce. 😉
DeleteOH MY GOODNESS!!!! It is beautiful, I am in love as well. Head over heels in love. I am excited for more photos with this beauty center stage. :-)
ReplyDeleteCarla
Thanks so much, Carla! I can’t stop staring at it. Of course, I still won’t let anyone sit in it!! Hahaha
