I decorated a plain white faux pumpkin with a few scrapbook paper flowers and turned it into a sweet, custom home decor accent for fall.
A little later than usual and on a weekend, but it has officially arrived.
I guess that means I have to put the beach towels away and start sharing pumpkins, right?
You may have noticed that while the rest of the internet has been covered in them for quite a while now, I've been showing some restraint.
I understand that I should've joined in, sharing fall decor ideas early enough to inspire, but I just love summer.
So I hate rushing it out the door. That means fall decorations aren't welcome in my home, until Mother Nature forces autumn upon me.
But that's ok, I'm ready.
You see a few weeks ago, I began cleaning out my basement stash and I made three piles.
Pile number one was labeled donations, number two was keep to display and number 3 was deemed the I could make something fun for out of this pile.
Of course, the longer I spent on this task, the more items moved from pile number one to pile number three.
That means I'm well stocked for the next few months of crafting. What's up first?
It's a super quick and colorful pumpkin makeover.
Having found easier ways to accomplish both of those things, these pumpkins remained unadorned and used as plain decor items, or worse, in recent years, they never made it out of the bin.
They were actually the first things to go into the donation pile.
Then I went shopping for some scrapbook paper to decoupage over the scratches on an old wooden tray, and had a brainstorm.
I could cover the pumpkins with flowers. I'd seen people doing it for years online, but never tried it myself and the white pumpkins were a blank canvas.
Plus, I thought the colors would look perfect with my new rust colored basement decor.
The process was super simple. You know the drill.
I chose a few flowers from the paper and cut them out. I'm a pretty lazy crafter, too, so I didn't worry about getting super close to the flower.
That's just too stressful, and I craft to relax. Besides on a white pumpkin, it's barely noticeable.
With my flowers all ready to go, I put some decoupage gel on the pumpkin with a brush from Dollar Tree. I love these brushes.
I mentioned it when I shared my floral bucket makeover last week, but they're so good, and cheap, that it's worth mentioning again.
Next up, I placed the paper flower on the pumpkin and flattened it down, adding more decoupage gel over it to seal it in place.
Since the pumpkin was round, the paper did buckle in a few spots. So like I did when I made my giant floral Easter eggs, I cut the paper in a few spots to help it mold to the arches without tearing.
I probably would've used a gloved finger to smooth the napkin down. Then again, the napkins wouldn't need to be cut.
They're so thin they would naturally curve and cling to the ridges of the pumpkin shape.
When all the flowers were in place and covered with decoupage, I set it aside to dry.
Later that afternoon, I brought it downstairs to see how it looked in the family room.
And I was thrilled.
Those big yellow flowers blooming in my basement.
It actually made me miss summer just a teeny tiny bit less.
I guess it's a good thing I have that big pile.
While I craft my way right back to June.
😉

Cute pumpkin!! This is a clever way to coordinate a plain pumpkin with the decor in each room!
ReplyDeleteThanks Patti! All these years of blogging and I’d never made one, so I figured it was time. 😉
DeleteSo pretty! The sunflowers are the perfect transition to Fall and I've seen these pumpkins so many times and think 'I could do something with those.' I guess I'm off to go shopping - since they're all on sale right now to make room for Christmas decor (that's also already on sale)! wink-wink!
ReplyDeleteThanks Ann! I bet a pumpkin covered in that pretty paper you used on your bookcase would be darling. ❤️
DeleteAdorable pumpkin, Kim! What a fun way to extend Fall and to blend in with your decor! The magic of decoupage! Love it!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Gail! Decoupage is better than paint, isn't it? It's a great way to customize anything...as you well know! 😉
DeleteI'm with you on enjoying every last minute of Summer. I guess I need to get my Fall stuff out too.
ReplyDeleteThe pumpkins turned out so cute!
We had a lovely late summer burst of warmth, which made it even harder to say goodbye this year, but today it's appropriately rainy, chilly and gray...fall is here! Haha! I think I need to some more "sun"-flower pumpkins to dull the sting! Haha!!
DeleteCute, cute, cute!! I have such a hard time donating things that I know could be something cute too. This was a good save ;o)
ReplyDeleteThanks Tania! Yes, donating is tough for me, too. I’m glad I was able to do something with at least this one pumpkin. The other is still in the “waiting” pile.
DeleteAdorable!!
ReplyDeleteJenna
Thanks so much, Jenna! I had fun with this one. Happy weekend and thanks for popping by!
DeleteAwesome fall decor, I love the sunflowers images you used.
ReplyDeleteThanks Anita! I had to have those pretty sunflowers somewhere in the house this fall.
DeleteWell done Kim and now you can do them up in the color of your choosing because we all get bored with the usual orange color for fall.
ReplyDeleteMary K. I LIVE for that orange color in the fall! Once, when I had more rooms with walls and doors, I painted and decorated a room for fall all year! ;-)
DeleteThanks Mary!! Yes, I do love a good orange pop here and there, but it's nice to add a few unexpected colors or ones that are more in keeping with our decor.
DeleteThat pumpkin turn out so be just so adorable!! I may have to go out just to buy plain white pumpkins (or orange ones) just to try this. You make so many craft projects look easy (or at least fun!); and that is so encouraging to me. I honestly would not know where to begin, but now I have a whole series of posts from you to walk me through it !! Thank you for that!!
ReplyDeleteKristine, you just made my day!! ❤️ I'm all about encouraging people to roll up their sleeves and get crafty. It really doesn't take any special skills, just a willingness to try. Well, that and maybe a willingness to get your hands a little dirty!! Haha!
DeleteI think this is so pretty. I just purchased some fall napkins and they would be perfect worked on a pumpkin. Thank you for idea.
ReplyDeleteBetsy, I'm so glad this is timely for you!! I bet your pumpkins will be beautiful!!
DeleteSuper Cute! Have a good start to the new week. Hugs. Kris
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Kris! Raining here…again…so sunflowers inside is a bonus! Haha!! Happy weekend!!
DeleteThat is a really really cute idea! Love it!!!! I have hated letting go of summer this year, too, but finally bit the bullet last week. I'll do the popping over a bit later. It's been a rushed day! xo Diana
ReplyDeleteI'm having a hard time with fall this year, too, Diana. Summer is my favorite, but this year it didn't even feel like summer until August and in early September we had our first 90+ degree week (those are the best for pool and beach)...plus since fall officially showed up, it's been raining here almost every day. A few sunflowers have made it {slightly} more bearable. xo
DeleteI've seen those pumpkins, and wondered what to do with them. As usual, yours are wonderful!
ReplyDeleteNapkins for me, though. Maybe in my leftover favorite napkins that I used to pick a color for my kitchen(s) years ago. (hahaha! I quit painting kitchens that color - 3 times, shortly after they were painted and looking all lovely, I moved! No more golden yellow kitchens in my future.)
p.s. I LOVE fall, and all the orange, burgundy, gold, green colors!
I love those fall colors, too, Nancy! They all go so well with red, too!! Haha! What a pop!! I hope you have using those napkins in your new kitchen. 😊
DeleteThat is a super cute pumpkin and a fun and easy project. Love the sunflowers!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much! Those sunflowers caught my attention in the aisle and I couldn't wait to get them in my home.
DeleteI like this, a bit of Summer and Autumn. :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks Carla! Summer and autumn? I'll take it!! Happy Fall Friday!!
DeleteYour pumpkin turned out really beautifully, no wonder you are thrilled. You can't beat a sunflower for cheering up anything.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much! I do love the sunflowers, especially in the basement where sunlight is scarce!! Thanks for the visit!
DeleteWhat a beautiful pumpkin you decorated and it's so perfect for fall and Halloween.
ReplyDeleteThanks Julie! I love peeking at this one whenever I go downstairs…to do the laundry! Haha!!
DeleteKim,
ReplyDeleteDarling pumpkin!! Fall is my favorite Season of the year with Summer being my least favorite....The heat and humidity just take a terrible toll on my anymore with my auto immune issues...
Hugs,
