Whip up a whimsical Christmas tree sign in no time with wall decal.
It's a great way to get a wooden sign for the holidays in minutes. And for a bargain price.
Check out the easy DIY.
No, no, no. I have not decorated for Christmas yet.
All of my trees, wreaths, lights and ornaments are still tucked away in storage waiting for the day after Thanksgiving to pop out of hiding.
However. Christmas crafting is a tricky business.
In order to have all of your projects ready on decoration day, you have to start a little early.
Sometimes I break out the Christmas craft supplies in July.
Now I could've saved this one until December, but in case some of you wanted to go grab the supplies before they're gone, I decided to share today.
You know, since I've been busy getting Christmas crafty.
This weekend, I was in the craft store and I saw a bunch of Christmas wall decals.
These stickers are such an easy ~ and completely foolproof ~ way to make a wooden sign.
I love them.
I think I shared the first one I made, way back in December of 2013.
It's held up very well and since then, I have used those wall decals to create some really fabulous home decor accessories from old cutting boards.
I knew I could make another fun sign for the holidays, so I grabbed a whimsical tree decal (<--- like this one) and got started.
This pack has some really interesting trees, too.
I needed a board and I didn't have one.
I've used boards from the dollar store to make smaller wooden signs, but they wouldn't work for this tree.
So my husband ran to the hardware store and grabbed a thin sheet and had them cut it to my desired size.
I told him I wanted something rustic looking.
An old board would've been best, but I didn't have time to go looking.
He did good with this one and again, it was under five bucks.
Making A Wooden Christmas Sign With Stickers
I liked the patina of the wood, but I wanted it to be a bit brighter so the letters would stand out more.
So I white washed it.
Well, I did it my way, the cheater's way.
I just squirted some paint on the board and ran a damp paper towel over it.
I made sure I worked my strokes in the same grain as the wood.
And I let it dry for about five minutes.
These stickers are made for walls and they are repositionable and removable.
It says so on the package.
That means you can move it around until it's perfect. Or in my case, good enough.
To make sure that it was secure, I ran my hands over it several times.
I also gave it a coat of decoupage gel.
I don't always do that, in case I want to swap out my sticker next year, but I love this one.
I wanted it to be permanently affixed.
I may have to keep out.
Ok, so I have one piece of Christmas decor up.
But who's counting?
Shhh....
How about you?

Merry Christmas, Friends!
I don't know why but I've always shied away from making sign...but this is about as easy as it can get! Thanks for your creative idea..
ReplyDeleteSuper easy, Cathy. It's quick and there's almost no mess. My favorite! I say give it a try...
DeleteI love it!! You make it look so easy. That decal is so great. The boards that I made bubbled so I had to peel them off...well, 2 of the three did. Maybe I gave them too many coats of decoupage?
ReplyDeleteThanks AnnMarie! Hmmm…I’m not sure why they bubbled. They were so pretty, I’m sorry that happened. I have to say that I am very sparing with decoupage, so maybe. I honestly don’t use it on half of them, because I keep thinking I’m going to remove the sticker and reuse the board someday. So far I’ve never done that. On a few of them, I have used decoupage, because I want it to be permanent, but also because I want the finish to be the same across the whole piece. I use it to camouflage the sheen of the sticker. I wonder if a bit of the decoupage got underneath the sticker and when it dried it created an air pocket? That has happened to me with paper.
DeleteLove this so much. Looks awesome. You are the craft queen. I hope to start some decorating this coming weekend.
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Kris
Thanks Kris! The photos are a little dark because I couldn't wait to make this one. I whipped it up tonight, after dinner. Took no time at all and I really like it...Have fun decorating! xoxo
DeleteKim this is perfection in a decal! Where did you get it from? I need one of these because I am awful at painting signs and anything.
ReplyDeleteI got the decal at JoAnn Crafts, Mary! I used the coupon and it was on sale. Dirt cheap. Go shopping!!
DeleteI love this!
ReplyDeleteI haven't started decorating yet either but I'm so anxious to start. Have you seen the prelit canvases? I'm thinking about making one with a Christmas box. I love them & they are a little pricey for a nice size. They look really easy to make though.
I have bought a few Christmas decorations & am going shopping this week at the Dayspring annual warehouse sale in my town.....hoping to find some nice Christmas decor this year at the sale.
I have seen those, Jenny and I love them. I am just not sure I have room for one more thing in this house, but I am thinking...I like trying new things and that is new!! Fun!
DeleteI wonder if this would stick to a mirror? I am going to try it. I can always peel it off I guess.
ReplyDeleteI bet it would! I think it would stay and I don't think it would leave a residue behind. If you try it, let us know!!
DeleteI just love this, Kim! The font is so merry!! I'm hoping I'll have a little extra time to do some crafts and baking this holiday season.
ReplyDeleteJane x
Thanks Jane! Enjoy your crafting and baking. Tis the season, right?
DeleteThat is so cute! My DIL has been hand painting signs and selling them. She is so talented and I could not be prouder of her.
ReplyDeleteThat's amazing, Debbie. I am always amazed by how many talented people there are out there. Best of luck to her!!
DeleteI love it. I have to go and see if my craft store has it. I start my decorating after Thanksgiving.
ReplyDeleteI love crafting by the fire and the tree, Betty, nothing better. I got an early start with this one, the Christmas crafting bug bit me! 😉

ReplyDeleteThanks Stacey...and they don't get easier than this one!

ReplyDeleteAmalia
xo
I am always impressed with your projects, Amalia, so I say the good influence works both ways! ♡
DeleteI admire your creativity! I just don't have the crafting mojo anymore. I used to make something most every day or work on a quilt. Your tree will be so pretty for Christmas. Could even put it on a porch.
ReplyDeleteBrenda
That's a great idea, Brenda. I just might put it on the porch. Thanks!
DeleteHi Kim, oh this is so nice and I love that it's a decal. I think I could definately handle making one too. It's so nice that your husband helps out too. I am hosting a small crowd for Thanksgiving so no I do not have any Christmas decorations up yet. Enjoy the week.
ReplyDeleteJulie
Thanks Julie! A helpful hubby is definitely a benefit when I need supplies! 😉 Enjoy the long weekend!
DeleteYou did it again!!!! Made me believe I could be crafty like you!! This is awesome, Kim, I love it! Now I'm thinking of what I could put those decals on and be creative like you, my friend!

ReplyDeleteI love making signs this way, Carol. No muss or fuss!

ReplyDeleteSO easy, Judy. That’s why I use them. Foolproof…and I can make a mess out of anything, so that’s good for me!! 😉 Happy Thanksgiving my friend. Enjoy the day! xoxo

ReplyDeletehugs,
Jann
Thanks Jann! Crafting during the holidays. Fabulous!
DeleteI love how you whitewashed the board, and then added the decal, really how easy is that! And I love the little star hanging to the side as well, perfect!
ReplyDeleteThanks Marilyn! When we go on vacation, I try to buy an ornament from the locale. That one stays out all year long. Too pretty to put in a box! Happy Thanksgiving!!
DeletePerfect!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI am chomping at the bit, but my Mom would reach down and zap me if I started with Christmas before Thanksgiving!! Since we will have about 35 people in the house for turkey day, I guess she still has a point.
Hugs to you and have a blessed Thanksgiving with your sweeties,
J
We usually have a big crowd here, too and in this tiny cottage, I can’t fit the people and the tree. So the people win and we decorate the day after! One holiday at a time, as my own mom would say!! Blessed Thanksgiving to you and your houseful of 35!! xo
DeleteThanks so much, Teri! I really do enjoy crafting. It's a meditation for me, but it has to be easy and inexpensive otherwise it stresses me out and defeats the purpose! Hugs to you too, my friend and wishes for a great Thanksgiving! ♡
