Make a simple DIY denim ring from an old pair of jeans. A few quick stitches and you'll have a cool new fashion accessory.

Come see the quick and easy tutorial!

Apparently, the DIY apple does not fall far from its tree.

This week, my daughter emerged from her room with the most darling custom denim ring.

It's something she whipped up from an old pair of jeans and a little bit of embroidery thread.

I was completely impressed...and I don't think it's just because I'm her mom.

It's absolutely adorable.

Denim Ring embroidered with word BABE on hand

Recently, we took to a trip to the ocean and every shop we popped into had some kind of denim jewelry or accessory featured.

My daughter was smitten with a few pieces, especially a bracelet and floral ring, but the price tags were crazy high.

Of course, big mouth mom said, No way, I can make that.

Well, while I was camped out in the laundry room and dealing with the post vacation pile of mail, little miss disappeared into her room and actually made the ring.

I'm not really surprised, she's always been into customizing her own clothes.

She said the ring was super simple to make, basically free, since we had all the supplies on hand and it took her less than an hour.

Check out our denim cup cozy, too!

Simple, quick and cheap? Sounds like an Exquisitely Unremarkable approved craft to me!

Here's how she did it.

How To Make A Denim Ring

The supplies:

Old Jeans - If you don't have a pair you're willing to sacrifice, the thrift store is a great place to find them for like $2.oo

Fabric Scissors

Needles - I have this assortment

Embroidery Thread

Denim Thread - How cool is this??

DIY Denim Ring Supplies on a table

First, she cut a strip of denim about one inch wide and long enough to wrap around her finger with a small allowance for a seam.

She didn't want a large seam though, as that would be uncomfortable to wear.

Denim strip with frayed edges

If you want a fringed look, like she has, you just need to pull a little at the ends and run your nail across the edge of the fabric. The material will naturally begin to fray.

Next, she got to work on the lettering.

She thought about making a floral ring, but like her momma, this girl is all about simple, so she decided to stitch a word on instead.

She chose "BABE". You can add whatever sentiment or picture that makes you happy, including a heart or a flower.

Just make sure the design will fit nicely on your finger.

Then, using a very simple stitch, like the one I used on my Thanksgiving embroidery project, she added each letter with embroidery thread.

To close up the ring, she used a lighter thread and a smaller needle and stitched it to size.

**For a bracelet, just use a longer, wider piece of denim and add snaps to close it up! **

That's it!

That's all it took for her to create her very own, super stylish, and very on-trend, denim fabric ring.

And just in time for back to school.

She can pair it with my vintage style denim boho tote bag.

That's one - er...two...less items on our shopping list.

Fabulous!

Are you into denim accessories?

    1. Thanks Kris! I really like it too. It's nothing like the ones in the store. They were very large and ornate. Too much for this simple girl, but I would actually wear this...and it was free. Even better! I already have my order in. 😉

  13. That really is cute! I love denim, would live in it if I could, so why not jewelry?

Years and years ago Redbook magazine had an article in their December issue of a woman--I remember she was a former model--who made the most beautiful Christmas banners for the wall out of old jeans, trimmed with scraps of lace and other various trimmings. Hers had Christmas messages on them and I still remember to this day how unique they were.

Maybe your daughter will be designing her own line of clothing some day!

    1. A banner made of denim? Oh Dewena, now you are speaking my language! I may have to try that myself this Christmas. Thanks! And who knows, maybe I do have a budding fashion designer in the making. That is what I originally went to college for...before I switched majors...three times! Ha!
