15 Basement Makeover Ideas

Last fall, my husband and I finally got around to updating our super kid friendly (um...messy) basement. We picked up a few items at the thrift store, I added several creative DIYs and poof, our mismatched space became a cohesive and cozy grown up room that we all love.

It wasn't a budget buster, yet the transformation was very dramatic.  We spent tons of time down there this winter, as it's become our new favorite room in the house ~ definitely time and money well spent.

So, when Hometalk asked me if I would like to curate a board for them and include my favorite basement makeovers, I was thrilled. There are truly so many inspiring people out there, refinishing their underground spaces to make them more functional, while creating extra livable square footage.

Of course, now that I have been looking around I have some updates I would love to make in my own renovated space. For example, I think it would really kick the style of my basement up a notch if we boxed out the painted support posts and header with wood!

Go take a peek and let me know what you think!

While you are poking around Hometalk, check out my other simple DIYs...every now and then, I do leave the basement. ;)

  2. Hello,
As you know, we will be taking on a big basement re do! If this weather holds, maybe they can dig and tear down the old wall and put up the new in April. I am praying for that. I really want to get this over with.
Thank you for the tips for the fun part.

  3. That's neat! It's amazing what people can do now with the bigger windows they put in them. Homes don't usually have basements here, probably because the ground is so hard, but it definitely would keep a home cooler.

    1. It's funny how certain parts of the country don't have basements, while others do, Su. I guess it's all about adapting to the climate! :)

  4. Living next to the ocean we don't have basements here. But in the past we have had and they do definitely add some great space to your home. Love your board - so much great inspiration there. Think I will be browsing for a while. Cathy

    1. Thanks Cathy! We live near the beach, too, but we are in the part of the neighborhood that does have a basement. I think I would miss the room tremendously if we didn't have it.

  5. Do you know I miss having a basement. I remember we had one up north, but living in Fl you don't get one. Its like having extra apt with you have a basement. Lovely ideas.

    1. I think I would have a hard time adjusting to a home without a basement, too, Vanessa. Although, a winter without snow, might make the trade off worth it! ;)

  6. Your basement redo is awesome! Love how you were able to create a space for you behind the couch area, and the fireplace add a special touch of ambiance to the room! I think its great that you can craft and be with the family too in such a great use of space!

    1. I love that silly fake fireplace! It’s been a really long, cold winter here and it made it a little more bearable to be able to retreat to that space with the whole family and hang out! :) Thanks for the visit!

  7. My basement is my bedroom, because I live in what I think is the old servants quarters, which fits lol I'm on the side of a mountain, which I think is the only reason I have a downstairs, basementy type space,

Love the remodel though and I definitely think that if you boxed out the support posts and header with wood it would look great, although they're pretty the way they are too :)
